How Long Does a Tattoo Take to Heal?
How Long Does a Tattoo Take to Heal?
A tattoo reaches surface healing in 2–4 weeks for most people. Full cellular healing of the deeper skin layers takes up to 6 months. What you see at week 2–3 — the skin looking closed and colour appearing bright — is surface healing only. Ink colour settles and clarity improves through weeks 4–8 as the deeper layers recover. Aftercare quality directly affects both timelines.
Ink Nurse Remedy Cream supports every stage of the healing process. Available in 100ml and 500ml pump. Australian made, endorsed by the Australian Tattooists Guild.
The four healing stages
Week 1 — Inflammatory phase
Redness, swelling, heat, and weeping plasma are your body’s normal inflammatory response. Keep it clean with Foam Nurse Tattoo Soap Wash, dry between moisturising applications, and protected from contamination.
Week 2 — Peeling phase
The outer skin layer sheds. Itching is common. Consistent moisturising with Ink Nurse Remedy Cream reduces itch and ensures peeling is gradual rather than heavy.
Weeks 3–4 — Surface closing
The skin looks healed and the tattoo appears bright. Underneath, the dermis is still recovering. Continue moisturising daily. Sun exposure at this stage can cause significant fading.
Months 2–6 — Deep healing and colour settling
The ink particles redistribute within the dermis and the skin fully regenerates. SPF protection during this phase has the highest long-term impact on how your tattoo ages.
What affects healing time
- Placement: areas with more friction (hands, feet, inner arm, ribs) heal slower and are more prone to patching
- Size and density: large, heavily saturated pieces take longer than fine-line work
- Skin type and health: immune function, hydration levels, and skin condition all affect healing rate
- Aftercare consistency: moisturising 2–3x daily from day one measurably affects healing quality
- Sun exposure: UV degrades ink in healing and healed skin; SPF after healing is protective
Using second-skin film to manage early healing
Tattoo Wrap Pro second-skin film creates a sealed healing environment in the first 3–5 days, reducing plasma weeping, contamination risk, and early irritation. It does not replace cream aftercare in weeks 2–4.
Best for / Not ideal for
Best for: first-time tattoo recipients, people with slow-healing skin, those wanting to understand what’s normal versus what requires medical attention.
Not a substitute for: professional medical advice if you suspect infection or an allergic reaction.
Frequently asked questions
My tattoo looks healed after 10 days. Is it?
The surface may be closed, but deeper skin layers are still healing. Continue moisturising and avoid sun exposure and soaking for the full 4-week surface healing period.
Why is my tattoo still itchy at week 3?
Itching at week 3 is usually a sign of deeper skin healing continuing underneath a healed surface. Keep moisturising. If itching is severe or accompanied by redness and heat, see a doctor.
My colour looks faded after healing. Is that normal?
Some colour settling is normal. Heavy fading or patching usually indicates the peeling phase was too aggressive — often from dryness, picking, or the wrong product.
How long until I can go in the sun?
Avoid direct sun for 4 weeks minimum. After surface healing, apply SPF 50+ every time the tattoo is exposed. UV is the primary cause of long-term tattoo fading.
Can I exercise during healing?
Light exercise is generally fine from week 2. Avoid heavy sweating directly over the tattoo, friction from clothing, or contact with gym equipment during the first 2 weeks.
I have a touch-up booked. How long should I wait?
Most artists recommend waiting 8–12 weeks after the original session before a touch-up. Confirm with your artist.
